PRODUCT INFORMATION

A Light Emitting Diode is a device which converts electrical energy to light energy. LED’s are preferred light sources for short distance (local area) optical fibre network because they: are inexpensive, robust and have long life (the long life of an LED is primarily due to its being a cold device, i.e. its operating temperature being much lower than that of, say, an incandescent lamp),can be modulated (i.e. switched on and off) at high speeds (this property of an LED is also due to its being a cold device as it does not have to overcome thermal inertia),couple enough output power over a small area to couple to fibers (though the output spectrum is wider than other sources such as laser diodes).
LEDs have significant advantages over incandescent and florescent technologies and as such they are expected to transform the global lighting sector. LED lighting has the potential of consuming up to 90% less electricity than incandescent bulbs and also offer significantly lesser energy consumption than other low-energy technologies such as compact fluorescent light bulbs. Apart from their higher efficiency, LEDs also have a lower cost of ownership, involve a longer operating life and are smaller.
The global demand of LED’s is also driven based upon their advantages over conventional technologies from an environmental perspective .Resource scarcity and climate change are of increasing concern with the lighting industry accounting for a significant share of the global electricity consumption. Usage and the worldwide drive to conserve energy and reduce CO2 emissions is driving the adoption of low energy lighting technologies. This has driven governments across the world to formulate guidelines and regulations to lower the carbon footprint, eliminate hazardous substances and increase energy efficiency. LEDs currently offer significant environmental benefits over conventional technologies. Their operating life significantly exceeds that of lights based on other technologies. They also require less frequent maintenance and don’t contain any hazardous wastes such as mercury.

Being the second most populous country and fifth major electricity consumer, India has been witnessing widening electricity demand-supply gap. Increasing urbanization, rising disposable income levels of consumers, growing population coupled with rising expenditure on promotional programs by government bodies as well as private players is boosting use of energy efficient products such as LED lighting products and is expected to grow in the coming years. Moreover, rising government support and introduction of innovative LED lighting products by manufacturers has resulted in reduction in prices of these products, thereby offering consumers with more options to choose from, according to their needs and preferences.

Additionally, LED lighting companies are focusing on product innovation to drive adoption of LED lighting in the country. LED manufacturers are also collaborating with online portals such as Flipkart, Amazon, etc., in order to facilitate easy sale and supply of LED lighting products to consumers. Over the last couple of years, rising energy consumption trends has led to growth in adoption of eco-friendly and energy efficient lighting solutions such as LED lighting products, especially in the country’s Tier-I and Tier-II cities. According to " India LED Lighting Market By Type, By Application, By End Use Sector, Competition Forecast and Opportunities, 2011 - 2021", LED lighting market in India is projected to register a CAGR of over 30% during 2016-2021, due to increasingly affordable prices of LED lights coupled with implementation of LED bulbs distribution scheme by the government of India at subsidized rates. Demand for LED lights in India is predominantly concentrated in the South and North regions due to high population density, increasing urbanization, rising number of government initiatives that encourage use of LED lights, etc. In 2015, LED lighting market in India was dominated by LED bulbs and lamps, followed by LED batten lights; and this trend is forecast to continue through 2021
